Volkswagen has announced pricing for the updated California campervan with buyers able to choose between Beach and Ocean specification, three 2.0-litre diesel engines, two and four-wheel drive and manual and automatic gearboxes. Unlike rival campervans, this is the only vehicle to be built in house by an established car company.

Prices start at just under £38,000 for the entry-level five-speed manual 101bhp Beach model, with the much more potent 148bhp version available for just shy of £40,000 with the addition of a six-speed manual gearbox. Opting for the seven-speed DSG automatic version adds around £1,800 to the price of the more powerful model too.

More luxurious Ocean trim is available from £47,840 for the 148bhp six-speed manual camper, with buyers able to add an automatic gearbox or four-wheel drive. Range-topping 201bhp models are also available with manual and automatic gearboxes, with buyers able to choose an automatic four-wheel drive model, unlike with the less powerful motor. Emissions for the latest California have been slashed by around 15 per cent over the previous model.

Beach models offer seating for up to seven passengers, with sleeping space for four, courtesy of a bed that converts from some of the seats and a second double bed in the pop-up roof. Meanwhile, a fold-out table and chairs are integrated into the sliding door and tailgate, with an integrated awning offering shade and weather protection. Ocean versions, on the other hand, include an electro-hydraulic pop-up roof with lighting, along with a kitchenette with two hobs, a fridge and a sink.

Order books for the new California open on August 3 with the first vehicles being delivered before the end of the year. Prices range from £37,657 to £54,975.
