Vauxhall releases sporty new Adam S city car

Vauxhall’s Adam city car is famed for giving buyers a million different combinations of colours, trims and wheels. However, there is no sporty model in the current range line-up, meaning that those after a chic and speedy small car have had to look to the hot models in the Mini Cooper, Fiat 500 and Citroen DS3 ranges.

However, Vauxhall has just upped the ante with its turbocharged 148bhp Adam S hot hatchback, which gains a healthy dose of power over its lesser stablemates. This top-of-the-range model has been set up with keen drivers in mind, offering sporty handling around corners and uprated brakes from Vauxhall’s VXRperformance range.

This new model features a six-speed manual gearbox and scampers to 62mph from a standstill in 8.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 124mph. This places it just below the Mini Cooper and Citroen DS3 THP 155 in the speed stakes, though it’s substantially quicker than the next-in-line Adam.

Despite the power on tap, the Adam returns a claimed fuel economy figure of 44.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 149g per km, though these figures once again lag far behind the Mini and also the Citroen.

Helping to augment the otherwise cutesy Adam’s looks, the S comes with 17-inch alloys and the option of 18-inch wheels – very large for a city car. It also receives a body kit with new bumpers, spoilers and a visible tailpipe giving it a sharper look. Buyers can choose from 10 paint colours along with four roof colours, including a contrasting red roof available for the first time on the Adam.

On the inside there is a choice of four different seat types, including supportive leather Recaro sports seats. Standard equipment includes climate control and a seven-inch colour touchscreen media system, which is compatible with Android and Apple smartphones.

This Vauxhall Adam S will debut at next month’s Paris motor show with order books opening in January 2015.
