Volkswagen has unveiled a concept car known as the New Compact Coupe.

The company revealed that it is a petrol-engined, performance-oriented coupe with "extraordinary economy" and CO2 emissions below the 100g/km mark.

It has been presented for the first time at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and sits between the Volkswagen Golf and Passat models in terms of size.

"Clean, uncluttered lines mix with sharp detailing including intricate bi-xenon headlight units, 19-inch Lugano alloy wheels and an aerodynamically efficient grille element to lend the New Compact Coupe an elegant yet imposing stance," according to the carmaker.

Meanwhile, motorists on the lookout for a top family car may want to consider the Passat, after the 1996-2005 model was named the best used family car of the decade by independent pricing firm CAP.

The company hailed the level of prestige offered by the Passat at an appealing price.
