Seat cars achieved "exceptional" sales over the past 12 months, the carmaker has announced.

The popular family car attained its best ever market share of 1.5 per cent in the UK in 2009, according to the latest figures.

And while it celebrates its performance, Seat is also preparing to launch new models in 2010, which could be interesting news for fans of used Seat cars who are hoping to get their hands on a nearly-new model this year.

The Ibiza ST and the Leon Cupra R will be among the new offerings from Seat as the brand looks to build on its recent success in the UK market.

Peter Wyhinny, head of Seat UK, said the firm's achievements in 2009 "cannot be overstated".

He continued: "The economic backdrop to this record market share was, arguably, the worst in living memory and yet the appeal of the Seat line-up has obviously shone through."

Seat, the only Spanish car manufacturer, was founded in 1950 and is now active in more than 70 countries around the world.
