Used car drivers bid for personalised plates

Used car drivers turned out to what proved to be a very successful auction for the DVLA recently, with one number plate selling for over £50,000.

The registration 888 A went to an unnamed businessman from the north-east of England for an incredible £51,035, emerging victorious out of three bidders for the unusual plate.

"Eight is viewed as a lucky number in some communities, and today it certainly proved lucky for us," said Damian Lawson, marketing manager at DVLA Personalised Registrations.

"We were quite stunned when the hammer finally came down."

It was not the only remarkable registration to go under the hammer during the three-day auction, which began on May 26th.

Other notable places included Fresh Prince's favourite BEL 4IR, as well as WA11 ACE, YES 8OB, TEX 8OY and CEN 5OR.

The licensing authority also recent saw a bidding war for 12 O, which again went to a mystery bidder who paid the princely sum of £63,290.ADNFCR-2576-ID-800560487-ADNFCR
