Toyota smashed its sales records last month following September’s licence plate change.

The company achieved a monthly retail volume of 17,267 units, a passenger vehicle volume of 15,770 units and record retail market share for plate change month of 7.13 per cent.

In addition, the group has already launched five new models this year - the Avensis, iQ, Urban Cruiser, Verso and a new generation Prius with Hybrid Synergy Drive.

"These impressive results highlight the ability of the Toyota range to tick all the boxes for today's motorist at a time when cost saving is a priority. It's a clear case of real people buying real cars with the legendary Toyota reputation for quality and reliability," said the automaker in a statement.

The company went on to say that the sales have also given a boost to UK manufacturing as the Auris and Avensis models are produced at the Toyota plant in Derby.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the Toyota Prius is able to achieve better rates of fuel economy than the car's official fuel consumption figures indicate.ADNFCR-2576-ID-19396364-ADNFCR
