Seatbelts essential for pregnant used car drivers

Mothers-to-be have been advised on how to drive safely and comfortably while pregnant.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, it is essential that women wear their seatbelts even if this may be uncomfortable.

The organisation recommends wearing the belt as low as possible, from hip bone to hip bone.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, commented: "It seems obvious, but we do urge pregnant women to keep wearing their seatbelts while driving.

"The steering wheel hitting the abdomen is the main danger for pregnant drivers in a collision, and the seatbelt is the only thing stopping the driver flying forward."

He went on to say that many pregnant women allow the shoulder strap or the lap belt ride up into the middle of the abdomen because they find wearing the safety device uncomfortable.

Last month, GEM Motoring Assist claimed that more should be done to tackle aggressive driving on UK roads, which could increase the risk of pregnant drivers being involved in a collision.ADNFCR-2576-ID-19650435-ADNFCR
