Renault launches powerful GT220 models

Renault has a long history of creating powerful versions of its small cars and latest in line is the Megane Sport GT220. While it may lack the ‘Renaultsport’ billing which separates the French company’s most focused performance cars, the Megane GT220 – which is available in three-door and five-door hatchback form and as a practical estate – this speedy machine, still offers enough punch for most buyers.

Renault is describing the new models as the entry level to the world of Megane performance driving, with the 217bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre motor powering all three models to 62mph in a speedy 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph. The company also claims that these models share some of the Renaultsport DNA, which makes its sportier models so sharp to drive.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, with 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tyres helping to contain the muscle. Stiffer springs and shock absorbers should boost the GT220’s grip around bends while larger front brake discs should stop the car equally quickly.

As for the interior, the GT220 models receive sports seats, a thick-rimmed leather steering wheel and aluminium pedals, along with polished carbon trim to separate them from lesser models. Meanwhile, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, Bluetooth and a reversing camera all come as standard.

Claimed fuel economy lags behind several rivals, standing at 38.7mpg, with CO2 emissions coming in at 169g/km. Prices for the five-door hatchback start at £23,245, with the three-door weighing in at £24,230 and the estate at £24,245.
