Police advise drivers to belt up

Drivers are being encouraged to belt up when behind the wheel as part of a Europe-wide initiative.

The Avon and Somerset Constabulary is among those to sign up to the TISPOL seatbelt campaign - which runs from September 10th-16th - and so mobile patrols will be on the lookout for lawbreakers.

Not wearing a seatbelt is among the top four most fatal driving offences, alongside speeding, using a mobile phone while on the road and drink and drug driving.

In 2011, there were 1,567 fixed-penalty £60 fines handed out to motorists in the Avon and Somerset area because of seatbelt offences.

Chief Inspector John Holt of Avon and Somerset's Operations and Roads Policing Unit said: "This seatbelt campaign is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on our roads."

He added anyone who breaks the law will be punished in an appropriate manner.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801446105-ADNFCR
