Mitsuoka creates striking stretched version of Mazda MX-5

Buyers after a compact, lightweight roadster, like the Mazda MX-5, but who want something much more exclusive and with added retro charm, now have a new option available to them; the Mitsuoka Roadster.

This car may be based on the third generation Mazda MX-5, which is still on sale in Mazda showrooms – ahead of the imminent launch of the all-new model – but Mitsuoka has completely transformed the look of the car, with a lengthened bonnet, swoopy, curved wings and a rounded off tail.

Trading on the increased popularity of retro machines like the growing number of Mini and Fiat 500 variants that have arrived in showrooms over the last decade, the Mitsuoka Roadster will be making its European debut in a number of showrooms across the South of England in mid-June.

According to Mitsuoka, the Roadster boasts “British sporting design” along with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and rear-wheel drive for sporty handling and will be available with the choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic unit. The Roadster features heated leather seats along with climate control and plenty of safety kit. It also sports a folding hard top, which can be opened and closed in just 12 seconds, making it the world’s fastest electric-folding metal roof.

Explaining the decision to launch this retro roadster in the UK, Jen White from distributor TW White & Sons, said: “The UK represents one of the largest classic car markets in the world. The unique design of the Mitsuoka Roadster draws inspiration from the classic roadster heritage and combines this traditional styling with the latest state of the art technology."

Prices for the Roadster stand at £53,800, making this model around two-and-a-half times the price of a standard Mazda MX-5 hard top.
