Mazda unveils prices and specifications for new MX-5

Mazda has completely overhauled its popular MX-5 roadster, with the new model staying true to the original version’s compact, lightweight format. This compact two-seater sports car is lighter than the previous model – tipping the scales at around 1,000kg – which should make it even sharper to drive than its predecessor.

While other cars have steadily got larger and heavier with time, this crash diet has seen the MX-5 shrink in size too, meaning that it should continue to appeal to driving purists after a car that ensures its speed with light weight and a moderately powerful engine rather than huge power reserves.

The new model will be available with two petrol engines – a 1.5-litre unit and 2.0-litre motor – along with five specification levels – SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. Prices start at £18,495 for the entry-level 129bhp 1.5-litre model and rise to £23,295 for the range-topping 158bhp 2.0-litre version.

All models include air conditioning, a six-speed manual gearbox, 16-inch alloy wheels, powerful LED headlights and electric, heated wing mirrors, while SE-L cars gain climate control, a digital radio, Bluetooth and cruise control along with Mazda’s seven-inch touchscreen media system. 2.0-litre versions add 17-inch alloy wheels, piano black wing mirrors and a limited slip differential for added traction.

Meanwhile stepping up to SE-L Nav adds sat nav with three years of free European map updates, while Sport trim adds goodies including rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, heated leater seats and an upgraded sound system. 2.0 Sport models get upgraded sports suspension while Sport Nav cars include sat nav.

The new Mazda MX-5 is available to pre-order now ahead of its UK debut at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
