Mazda unveils new CX-3 off-roader

Compact off-roaders are big business and following the success of smaller models such as the Nissan Juke, Mazda has unveiled its latest model at a special preview event at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show.

This new five-door off-roader slots below the company’s popular CX-5 4x4 and shares the sharp ‘Kodo’ design style which now features across Mazda’s model range. Based on the 2 supermini, this new Mazda crossover is entering one of the fastest growing segments in the car industry, and has to face up to an ever longer list of rivals.

In addition to its sharp lines, what makes the CX-3 stand out are its chic and practical interior plus the option of economical front-wheel drive versions and four-wheel drive variants, which should cope better with slippery surfaces.

Buyers will be able to choose from three engines – a pair of 2.0-litre petrol motors as well as a 1.5-litre diesel. Six-speed manual gearboxes will come as standard, with a six-speed automatic transmission featuring on the options list.

Mazda’s latest model goes on sale in spring 2015 and should compare favourably with rivals with its impressive combination of fuel economy and punchy acceleration. Thanks to Mazda’s proven ‘SKYACTIV’ fuel-saving technology this machine should boast low running costs too.

A suite of new ‘i-ACTIVSENSE’ safety gear will also appear in the CX-3, while passengers will be able to play with Mazda’s MZD-Connect in-car media and entertainment system.

The Japanese car company has also used the LA Auto Show to show off its new MX-5 sports car and the updated 6 saloon and CX-5 off-roader.
