Mazda has announced details of its upcoming 2 supermini, which is set to take on the bestselling Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa when it arrives next year.

The 2 – Mazda’s top-selling car – is set to go through a dramatic transformation to bring it into line with the Japanese company’s strikingly-styled model range. Key physical features of the new car include its longer wheelbase and short overhangs – which free up extra space in the cabin.

Four new engines will be available in the upcoming 2 – three petrol units and one diesel. The petrol engines produce from 74bhp to 113bhp, while the diesel weighs in with 104bhp. Five trim levels will be available: SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. According to Mazda the new car will offer generous levels of standard equipment and high quality construction.

Kit featuring on the new 2 includes standard hill hold assist for easy hill starts, a seven-inch touchscreen media system, digital radio, sat nav, keyless entry and climate control featuring on higher specification models. The 2 also comes with MZD smartphone connectivity, allowing both those with Android and Apple phones to connect to the car.

Prices for the new car are set to start at £11,995 and rise to £17,395 when the car goes on sale in the UK early next year. A special ‘Sports Launch Edition’ will also be available initially, for £14,995. This model features the 89bhp petrol motor along with sat nav, automatic lights and wipers, rear parking sensors, metallic paint and 16-inch alloy wheels.
