Kia readies all-electric Soul EV for UK

Electric cars are starting to take their place on UK roads and the latest model to arrive comes from Kia.

The Korean brand’s entrant in the electric car arena is the Soul EV – a boxy but stylish medium-sized crossover, which competes against mid-size electric machines including the Ford Focus Electric, Volkswagen e-Golf and Renault Zoe. Conventional alternatives include the Nissan Juke, Nissan Note and Citroen C3 Picasso.

The Soul EV has been designed as a battery electric car suited to city commuters thanks to its class-leading range, spacious cabin and large boot. This new electric car offers a claimed range figure of 132 miles between charges, which compares positively with other electric models.

While the Renault Zoe comes very close to the Soul with an official range of 130 miles, the Nissan Leaf lags behind with 124 miles and the VW e-Golf and BMW i3 chalk up just 118 miles. In contrast the Ford Focus Electric can only muster 100 miles, according to official figures.

The Soul EV features a 109bhp electric motor, which provides maximum pulling power across all engine speeds and drives the front wheels. It takes 11.2 seconds to hit 62mph and tops out at around 90mph. The car can be charged using a standard household electricity supply and takes around five hours using an AC slow charger. This drops to as little as 25 minutes with a 100kW rapid charger.

The battery pack is mounted beneath the cabin, ensuring a low centre of gravity, which should improve the car’s ride and handling and the Soul utilises regenerative braking to capture and recycle energy that would otherwise be wasted while the car is coasting and braking.

This Kia also features several state-of-the art energy saving features such as the latest heat up pump, smart air intake control system and a unique ventilation system that ensures maximum driving range without losing much energy for air-conditioning, heating and ventilation systems.

The first Kia Soul EVs have already rolled off the production line and should land in dealerships before the end of the year. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
