The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised young drivers to take extra care when driving in the cold weather this week and whenever conditions are bad this winter.

Some youngsters may only have acquired used cars a few months ago after passing their tests and this could be their first winter as qualified drivers.

The ABI told parents to advise their sons and daughters to avoid dark, winding country roads, noting accident rates for young drivers are 37 per cent higher on these than on urban routes.

It also advised youngsters to be aware of distractions, with US studies showing a driver with three or more passengers is three times more likely to have a fatal crash.

The ABI also noted 44 per cent of accidents occur when music is being played in the car, while illegal activities like drink driving and texting while at the wheel are also common factors in accidents.

Met Office warnings have been issued for tomorrow (January 18th), when heavy snow is expected across Wales and western parts of England.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801524100-ADNFCR
