IAM urges caution in snow and ice

Drivers of approved used cars have been urged to take care when driving this week, as snowy and icy conditions look set to continue for the foreseeable future.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered drivers of approved used cars some tips on how to drive safely in the snow and ice.

Windows should always be cleared to maximise visibility, while snow that could fall onto the windscreen from the roof should also be removed.

When moving off from a stationary position, the IAM suggests moving off slowly, avoiding high revs that could result in spinning wheels. Using higher gears should also help the driver to maintain traction as well as control speed when cornering.

"Avoid travelling unless completely necessary, and don't ignore police warnings or advice to not travel on specific routes," said IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger.

The IAM recently suggested that its advanced driving courses, which deal with techniques such as travelling in adverse weather conditions, would make perfect Christmas presents for any motoring enthusiast.
