Careless car parking caused £1.3 billion worth of damage in 2011, newly-released research has found.

According to, one-in-six motorists do not leave their contact details if they prang someone else's vehicle, while only 45 per cent would do so if the accident was serious.

As well as this, 65 per cent of drivers believe part of the problem is the fact that parking bays are too small.

Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at the comparison website, stated: "Motorists should be extra vigilant in car parks, taking into account the size of our cars compared to the average size of parking spaces."

He added there needs to be an improvement in car parking etiquette.

Some 31 per cent admit the reason they prang and run is because of the level of shame they feel, while 30 per cent point to the financial implications of having to claim on their insurance.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801323290-ADNFCR
