Winter tyres 'should not affect insurance'

Motorists considering fitting winter tyres on their used cars have been advised that this amendment should not affect their insurance cover.

The AA believes that there is some confusion over whether the fitting of winter tyres is classed as a modification and therefore warrants an increased premium or a violation of insurance cover.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, commented that: "It is ludicrous for an insurer to penalise a driver for fitting winter tyres."

Mr Douglas argued that by fitting these seasonal tyres it "underlines a responsible approach to safety by the driver as well as reducing the likelihood of a collision".

The British Tyre Manufacturers' Association recently recommended the use of winter tyres when temperatures average less than seven degrees C.

By using these specialist tyres, drivers can improve their vehicle's braking, accelerating and steering performance.
