The new Volvo V40's safety credentials have been recognised by car magazine Auto Express, receiving the publication's 2013 Safety Award.

Introduced last year, the V40 - a five-door hatchback available in standard, R-Design and Cross Country trims - is fitted with innovative safety technologies such as the world's first pedestrian airbag.

It also features Volvo's City Safety collision avoidance system, which detects pedestrians and vulnerable road users at low speeds and automatically deploys the car's brakes.

The New Car Assessment Programme gave the V40 a five-star safety rating and a higher score than it has awarded any other vehicle.

Steve Fowler, editor in chief of Auto Express, said: "Volvo is synonymous with safety and the new V40 underlines that by winning the Auto Express Safety Award."

He praised the vehicle's multiple innovations, claiming that they were both cost-effective and lifesaving.

"Every car should be as safe as a Volvo V40," he concluded.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801607545-ADNFCR
