Volkswagen cars have remained popular throughout July, underlining the brand's continued appeal during the global economic downturn.

July marks the third successive month of growth in global deliveries, increasing by 15.2 per cent last month alone.

Detlef Wittig, executive vice-president of sales and marketing at the Volkswagen Group, said that the figures show Volkswagen is "present on the right markets with the right products at the right time".

However, he said: "However, the recession is not over yet ... That is why we are viewing further developments with caution."

Demand was particularly high across the Golf, Lavia, Passat Lingyu, Jetta and Bora ranges.

Meanwhile Audi also reported impressive delivery growth, with increases of 2.1 per cent recorded throughout July bringing total shipments to 85,000.

Last week, Golf revealed the pricing details of its new BlueMotion Golf Plus, which boasts a 1.6-litre engine capable of 65.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 114g per kilometre.
