Sales of Volkswagen cars have experienced a significant year-on-year sales increase, it has been revealed.

The latest data from the German manufacturer reveals that it delivered 2.95 Volkswagen cars to customers worldwide in the period between January and July.

This represents a 12.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, when 2.62 million vehicles made it to customers.

Christian Klingler, board member for sales and marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said the firm was delighted with the results from the first seven months of the year.

"The Volkswagen brand has made a good start to the second half of the year with a strong delivery performance in July. Our young and innovative product range has helped us maintain the brisk momentum," he said.

In the first half of the year, Volkswagen's sales revenue rose 26 percent to €77.8 billion (£68.2 million).
