Mazda has refreshed its 6 saloon and estate range for 2015. The new model will go on sale early in the new year, priced from £19,795.

Unveiled at last month’s Los Angeles motor show, the 6 been subjected to design and equipment revisions despite being on sale only since 2012, due to renewed competition from the brand-new Ford Mondeo.

Exterior changes are subtle; limited to a sleeker front grille, LED rear lights and a new shark fin-style antenna mounted on the roof.

However, it is in the cabin where Mazda has focused its attention. Gone is the old infotainment display, replaced with a more upmarket-looking freestanding touchscreen item, as seen in the smaller Mazda 3 hatchback. The centre console has also been revised to address criticisms that the interior design felt dated compared to rival family cars. Other additions include an electronic parking brake and the option of heated rear seats.

Five trim levels are offered, with even entry-level SE cars coming equipped with DAB digital radio and the touchscreen interface as standard. Top-of-the-range Sport Nav cars are generously specified, with highlights of the extensive kit list being a reversing camera, head-up display, electrically-adjustable leather seats and LED headlights.

A full suite of electronic safety aids, including adaptive headlamps, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist, are also available.

Engines are unchanged from the pre-facelift model. Just two are offered: a 2.0-litre petrol in 143bhp and 163bhp guises, and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel, available with either 148bhp or 173bhp. Both are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, though an automatic ’box is available as an option.
