The UK's motor industry is said to have some of the cleanest and most efficient automotive plants in Europe.

That's according to a new report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which reveals that UK automotive manufacturing facilities have cut CO2 emissions per vehicle by 40.9 per cent over the past decade.

The report shows that the UK motor industry achieved a 19 per cent increase in turnover between 1999 and 2008.

"I am proud of the achievements industry has made during the last decade and the way it has responded to the unprecedented challenges of the recession," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

He added that ultra-low carbon technologies are set to be a "crucial" part of the industry in future.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Toyota is the first car manufacturer to surpass the European Union's carbon dioxide emissions target.

The car maker achieved the 130 g/km of CO2 standard three years ahead of schedule.
