Toyota regains 'world's top car sales' crown

Toyota posted record sales figures for last year, selling 9.75 million vehicles worldwide, re-crowning the company the world's top car seller for 2012.

Other figures show that General Motors (GM) sold 9.29 vehicles and Volkswagen (VW) sold 9.07 vehicles, enabling Toyota to clinch the top spot again.

The car manufacturer had lost out to GM and VW in 2011 - having held the spot for the previous three years - following a disastrous recall crisis as well as crippling supply issues following natural disasters in both Japan and Thailand.

Statistics show that Toyota's sales were boosted by almost 23 per cent on figures from the previous year. Despite the overall figure also comprising sales within other enterprises, Toyota-only sales hit record highs at 8.72 million vehicles, Reuters reported.

Despite such a positive result, Toyota recorded its first annual sales decline in China in nearly a decade in light of recent territorial disputes between China and Japan last year. This was, however, offset by positive sales figures from other markets.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801529554-ADNFCR
