Stunning Alfa Romeo 4C Spider unveiled

How do you make a two-seater sports car even more desirable? Chop the roof off, of course! Alfa Romeo has made us fall in love with its 4C all over again, with this new Spider convertible model.

Unveiled at this month’s Detroit motor show, the 4C Spider is expected to reach showrooms this summer - perfect timing for any convertible. It will initially be available with a folding cloth roof, though a removable carbon fibre clamshell arrangement will also be offered in due course.

The 4C Spider uses the same turbocharged 1.8-litre engine, as the coupe. Developing 237bhp, it will get the 4C from 0-60mph in as little as 4.1 seconds.

Aiding that impressive acceleration figure is the car’s extensive use of lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre, which underpins nearly every element. Even the glass is 10 per cent thinner than in the coupe model, to save as much weight as possible.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via Alfa’s six-speed dual clutch gearbox, which is operated via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. A drive-select system allows drivers to set up the car’s parameters based on four settings: All Weather, Natural, Dynamic and Race.

A highlight amongst the options is a lightweight sports exhaust from renowned manufacturer Akrapovic, which gives the four-cylinder motor a greater vocal range.

Alfa Romeo will release more information on options and specifications nearer the 4C’s launch date in the summer. No word on pricing yet, but the 4C Spider is expected to start from around £45,000.
