January saw steady sales of Volkswagen cars as the group strengthened its position in key markets worldwide.

Overall, the company delivered 418,600 vehicles to customers across the globe last month, a rise of 0.1 per cent compared to December.

However, deliveries in the North American market rose 30.2 per cent to reach 39,600 units, with an increase of 47.9 per cent in the United States.

Sales of Volkswagen cars were less robust in Europe, where the ongoing economic uncertainty led to a 2.9 per cent drop in deliveries.

Christian Klingler, board member for sales and marketing for the Volkswagen Group, said it was a good start to 2012.

"The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand made a stable start to the new year. Despite volatile developments, particularly in Europe, we maintained deliveries at last year's high level thanks to our young and innovative product range," he said.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801295155-ADNFCR
