One of the most popular Peugeot cars has been beaten in the voting for the greatest small sports car of all time, it has been announced.

Readers of Autocar magazine were invited to vote for their favourite hot hatchback of all time, with Peugeot's 205 coming in second place.

Winner of the public vote was the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, achieving 14.3 per cent of votes - nearly twice that of the second-placed Peugeot.

However, perhaps the overwhelming victory of the Lancia can give the 205 some pride in its "best of the rest" tag.

"It's no surprise Autocar readers have voted for the Lancia - when launched back in the 80's it very quickly acquired a large and enthusiastic fan base founded on its rally success," said Chas Hallett, editor of Autocar.

The successor to the 205, the 207, recently saw a special edition Millesim introduced to celebrate Peugeot's 200th birthday.
