Part worn tyres sales 'need to be regulated'

Action needs to be taken to clamp down on the sale of part worn tyres in the UK.

This is according to TyreSafe, which found 98 per cent of part worn tyres currently being sold do not meet existing regulations.

As a result, the group is calling on Trading Standards to investigate the matter in an effort to improve consumer safety.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, stated: "Despite clear legislation, it would appear from our investigation that the sale of illegal part worn tyres is a very real problem."

He added companies involved in this practice need to be made aware of the consequences of their activities.

Problems such as unsafe repairs, exposed cords and bead damage need to be taken seriously or else too many motors will be travelling around in an unsatisfactory condition.

In 2011, illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were found to be partially responsible for 1,200 road casualties.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801379573-ADNFCR
