New winter driving initiative launched

Used car owners will be able to pick up a free ice scraper and winter driving advice booklet from participating service stations as part of a new initiative designed to encourage safer driving.

The Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) and Jet Service Stations are working together to try and raise awareness of the important considerations facing those who will be on the roads in winter conditions.

Their scheme will begin from November 28th and the packs can be collected from any of the 62 participating Jet Service Stations.

Over 2,328 accidents were caused by vision impairments due to the winter weather in 2010, leading to 3,318 casualties and 20 fatalities.

Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the IAM, said that the number of serious accidents on UK roads is falling and that it is important for this trend to continue.

He said: "Preparing your car before you set off is as important as your performance on the road when conditions get tough."

Earlier this month, the Association of British Insurers called for the government to implement measures designed to boost the safety of the youngest motorists on the road.

It highlighted the role that technology can play in achieving this, but also called for more regulation on these drivers.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801221146-ADNFCR
