Motorway 80mph speed limit trial is a 'gamble'

Plans to trial 80mph speed limits on some of the UK's busiest motorways have been criticised by road safety campaigners.

Brake says the proposal is a "gamble with people's lives", and is concerned that drivers will see no real benefit from a change in the law.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of the charity, argues that all the research points to higher speeds resulting in more accidents.

"It is hard to see the logic behind this trial when the potential benefits of 80mph limits are so questionable," she says, noting higher limits will have a marginal effect on roads already congested with too many cars.

"The government should instead look at how it can reduce costly and devastating crashes," adds Ms Townsend.

It comes as the government faces criticism for another motoring policy, which would see private firms take over the running of major roads.

Both the AA and the Institute of Advanced Motorists called into the question the effectiveness of the scheme.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801321099-ADNFCR
