Drivers of new and used cars who are thinking of buying their motor insurance online might wish to peruse the latest expert advice.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published the good practice guide today (December 29th) to assist consumers when they purchase general cover such as car or home insurance.

It is aimed at those using price comparison tools as well as going directly to insurers' and brokers' websites, with the aim of helping people to find the right product for their personal circumstances.

The guidance has been developed by the ABI together with consumer group Which?, the British Insurance Brokers Association and leading insurance comparison websites.

Going online can help consumers to get the "best policy at the most competitive price", said Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health.

"But the ease and speed of going online must be balanced with ensuring that people understand the terms, conditions and cover of the policies they are comparing," he added.

Moneysupermarket.com recently published separate advice which aims to help drivers of new and used cars find the cheapest car insurance policies.
