Mercedes unveils its new GLE Coupe

Luxury car manufacturer Mercedes has revealed its latest offering, the GLE Coupe, which will go head to head with BMW’s X6. In a similar vein to BMW’s X6, the new Mercedes combines the styling cues of a coupe with the proportions and underpinnings of an SUV – in this case the GLE off-roader.

The German car company claims that its new model will share that mix of sports car and off-roader attributes when it comes to on-road handling too, with drivers able to choose between multiple driving modes on the move. Mercedes’ ‘Dynamic Select’ allows drivers to switch between comfort and several sports modes, along with ‘Slippery’ which aims to make the most of the traction available on low-grip surfaces.

Three engines will be available in the GLE Coupe – one diesel and two petrol motors, all of which will come with four-wheel drive and mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The GLE350d features a 255bhp 3.0-litre diesel, while the less powerful petrol has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine and produces a substantial 329bhp.

Sitting at the top of the range is the GLE450 AMG, which has a more heavily-tuned 3.0-litre twin-turbo motor, kicking out a hefty 362bhp. This new model will become the first ‘AMG Sport’ model in Mercedes’ line-up, offering more power than standard versions but less than the full-blown AMG performance version.

The GLE450 AMG also gains unique bumpers for a more aggressive look, which added to by a rear spoiler and bold 21-inch alloy wheels. UK pricing and specifications for the GLE Coupe have yet to be confirmed, though Mercedes will reveal all closer to the car’s 2015 launch.
