The Honda Civic has been named as the best economy vehicle at the Women's World Car of the Year awards.

It emerged on top ahead of some stiff competition - there were over 300 motorists originally long-listed for the prize.

Value-for-money, safety, aesthetic appearance, child friendliness and storage space were among the categories the Civic was assessed on.

Toshiaki Konaka, director of Honda's Motor Europe car division, said: "This award highlights the unique exterior styling and practical interior that are synonymous with the Civic model and meet the needs and desires of customers ... in Europe."

The Volkswagen up! and Ford Fiesta came in second and third place respectively.

It comes after Honda recently unveiled a series of updates to the Civic range, including the development of a new wagon-style Civic model.

The BMW 3-Series also took home an accolade from the Women's World Car of the Year awards, as it was named best family car.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801465647-ADNFCR
