Designated drivers of new and used cars are to be rewarded, thanks to the THINK! Christmas drink drive campaign.

More than 8,000 pubs and student union bars across the UK will be offering deals on free soft drinks in conjunction with Coca-Cola's Designated Driver initiative.

Launched today by road safety minister Mike Penning, the campaign will include radio advertising, posters in pub washrooms, online search activity and Facebook advertising, all to remind drivers of the consequences of drink driving convictions.

Mr Penning commented: "The number of drink drive deaths has fallen by more than 75 per cent since 1979, but drink driving is still devastating lives with around 250 people killed in collisions where a driver was over the limit last year."

This month there has been numerous warnings about the personal and wider consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol, which MoneySupermarket.com claimed recently could increase car insurance costs by 85 per cent.
