BMW 2 Series Active Tourer arrives September

BMW has confirmed that its latest model, the 2 Series Active Tourer, will be available in UK showrooms from September, with prices starting from £22,150.

The Active Tourer represents something of a departure for the premium German marque. Not only is it its first people carrier model, it is also the first to be available in front-wheel-drive configuration, something that the famously driver-oriented brand has resisted offering until now.

As such, the new car shares its underpinnings with the new Mini – which is front-wheel-drive only – and not those used in the recently launched 2 Series Coupe, which itself is a saloon version of the 1 Series hatchback.

Engines are also carried over from the new Mini model, with the entry-level 218i equipped with a 134bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol motor. The 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine in the 218d is likely to prove the more popular option in the UK, with its potential for greater fuel economy. Prices start from £22,150 and £24,205 respectively.

More powerful petrol and diesel engines will be offered after the Active Tourer’s showroom debut, along with the option of four-wheel-drive on selected models.

Standard equipment on base SE models includes an electric tailgate, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity, automatic lights and wipers, DAB digital radio, keyless go and a multi-function leather steering wheel.

Pay a £1,250 premium and you’ll get into a Sport model, which is further bestowed with larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports front seats, LED interior lighting and gloss-black interior trim.

At launch, Luxury models will top the range, and are priced at £2,000 over SE models. For that you’ll get leather upholstery, wood trim and chrome detailing on exterior trim pieces.

November will see the introduction of the headline M-Sport trim level, which will include revised suspension for a more engaging drive, and a number of styling enhancements both inside and out to give a sportier aesthetic.
