Audi has reported a successful batch of sales figures for last year, as the carmaker surpassed its own expectations, shipping 1.45 million cars and taking €48.8 billion (£41.8 billion) in revenue.

The automotive manufacturer enjoyed an operating profit of €5.4 billion and recorded a return on sales of 11 per cent, despite the difficult conditions - especially for the automotive industry - seen across many sectors as a result of the financial crash and the fall in consumer spending power.

Chief executive of the company Rupert Stadler said of the year: "We surpassed our targets in 2012 and added an attractive premium brand, Ducati, to our brand portfolio."

As employment rates remain a difficult issue across not just Europe but further afield as well, the company furthermore announced that it plans to recruit around 1,500 people in Germany alone this year, while also offering 700 young people apprenticeships in order to help further their careers.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801558825-ADNFCR
