Volvo cars take next step in ambitious road train plan

The Volvo cars involved in the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (Satre) project have completed their first test demonstrations.

Under the project, Volvo is helping to develop a system which sees three cars being driven autonomously behind one lead truck at a safe speed, with a gap of six metres between each.

The ambitious Satre project, driven by seven major European firms, aims to improve safety and fuel efficiency on conventional roads by forming a number of road trains.

Erik Coelingh, technical project manager at the Volvo Car Corporation., confirmed that the initial tests have been successfully completed, and the company hopes to have a fully functional road train in operation by the end of the year.

At this point, discussions with experts, politicians, legislators and traffic safety researchers will begin, to see whether road trains of Volvo cars can be made a reality on European highways.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801274198-ADNFCR
