Survey reveals impact of high fuel prices
Although many new family hatchbacks and saloon cars are more efficient than ever before, many motorists believe that they cannot afford the upcoming fuel duty rise. As things stand, in January, the government will introduce a 3p per litre fuel tax rise, but a recent poll from FairFuelUK found that 85 per cent of British drivers believe the cost of petrol and diesel is already having a negative effect on their social lives. The report also suggested that nearly three million 'ghost cars' now exist in the UK, as people cannot afford to use them more than once a week. Quentin Willson, national spokesman for FairFuelUK, said: "Unless the Chancellor scraps the 3p rise on Wednesday next week he'll be delivering a cruel Christmas and an impoverished New Year to millions of families and tens of thousands of UK businesses." He added that as a society, the UK has never seen this amount of pressure on personal mobility. Recent research from Enterprise revealed that 65 per cent of British motorists have already changed the way they drive to use less fuel.
Industry experts and researchers have suggested that electric cars could be sold like mobile phones.
