Study reveals reliability benefits of used cars
Anyone looking for used cars that will be reliable for some time to come may want to take a look at new research conducted by Warranty Direct.
The firm analysed 50,000 live policies to see what older vehicles offer the lowest chance of failure.
In many cases, it was found that older models are less likely to fail than their newer incarnations.
Audi and Volkswagen cars featured on the list, with A4 models made between the year 2000 and 2005 found to be eight per cent less likely to fail than those made after these dates.
The Volkswagen Golf showed a similar trend, with those manufactured between 1997 and 2006 found to be six per cent less likely to fail.
Warranty Direct managing director Duncan McClure Fisher says the research indicates that new does not necessarily mean more reliable.
"We also found that repair costs are often higher for new models so, as well as paying over the odds for a new car, you may also be opening yourself up to additional, unwanted costs," he added.
