Police campaign uses shocking footage

Devon and Cornwall Police has resorted to the use of dramatic footage as its pre-Christmas campaign against drink-driving begins.

The force has put a video of CCTV footage of a crash caused by a drink driver, who ploughed into the side of a pub in Brixham and seriously injured the landlord in the process on YouTube.

Driver Leigh Brennan was driving at 60 mph while drunk and received a 12-month prison sentence, as well as a two-year driving ban.

"The devastation caused by drink driving can be seen clearly in the CCTV footage," said head of roads policing inspector Richard Pryce, who noted a crowd of people had been stood at the spot moments before, making it a "miracle" nobody was killed.

As well as being a danger to themselves and pedestrians, drink-drivers can also cause a hazard to family car users.

Data from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for 2011 showed 280 people were killed in drink-drive incidents over the course of last year, with 1,290 seriously injured.ADNFCR-2576-ID-801498497-ADNFCR
