Online car sales 'outperform car dealerships'

Online car sales 'outperform dealers'

While traditional bricks-and-mortar car dealerships have been experiencing reduced footfall in January, the same can not be said of internet car retailers, it is reported.

Would-be car buyers appear to have been deserting the car dealerships for online showrooms, according to Autotorq.

The company said forecourt sales of 60 per cent below normal levels do not appear to have been uncommon, whereas retail networks have reported online sales of up to four times higher than normal as people stayed at home in the snowy conditions.

"Whilst it was very difficult for dealers to run their forecourt and showroom operations in the adverse weather, the online environment was unaffected," explained Autotorq's chief operating officer Stewart Niblock.

He made his comments as Which? referred to online car purchases as a "win-win" situation.

The consumer group pointed to the bargain prices and enhanced legal protection that can be available through buying online as opposed to making purchases at traditional car dealers.
