Motorists warned about drink driving over festive season

Drink driving dangers highlighted

Drivers of new and used cars are being warned not to drink and drive over the festive season.

As well as the obvious safety implications, motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol could face far-reaching consequences regarding their car insurance policies, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Motorists convicted of the offence could see their premiums double in cost, the website warned, while some might even find they are totally uninsurable in future.

The price comparison site pointed out some car insurance companies will not even provide a quote for motorists who have a drink driving conviction.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol is simply not an option," said Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com. "It is not only the risk to your own safety that needs consideration, but a second thought must be paid to others around you."

Meanwhile, a firm specialising in cover for motorists aged over 50 is celebrating this month after bagging an industry award.

RIAS was named in the Auto Express 2009 Driver Power Survey as one of the top two providers in the UK.
