Motorists call for tough enforcement of driver bans
Driver safety is being compromised by the government's "soft" approach to enforcing the licensing system, according to GEM Motoring Assist.
Current rules stipulate that motorists will have their licence suspended after collecting 12 penalty points. However, a loophole allows drivers to stay on the road if "exceptional circumstances" can be proved.
The latest DVLA figures show that more than 10,000 UK motorists are currently still driving despite having collected 12 points.
In response, GEM conducted a survey which found that nearly 80 per cent of British motorists believe that all drivers who reach 12 points should be banned, regardless of circumstances.
GEM chief executive officer David Williams says many thousands of people are "working the system".
"It is clear that the large majority of law abiding UK drivers are not happy that other motorists are getting away with dodging penalties by claiming 'exceptional circumstances'," he added.
