Fiat wins green award

FIAT has been given an award in recognition of its environmental efforts.

The company's fuel-saving initiative eco-Drive was named among the Green Champion winners at the 2009 International Green Apple Awards.

Film actress Alexandra Bastedo and Michael Cooke, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, presented the prizes at the House of Commons.

Luis Cilimingras, who is responsible for the eco:Drive project at FIAT Group Automobiles, went up to collect the award.

He pointed out that the scheme has already earned several accolades, but before now they had largely been for innovation or marketing.

"The Green Apple accolade is much more fulfilling, since it gives recognition of the work we have done for the environment," he said.

It has been a month of celebration for FIAT, with official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing that the FIAT 500 has made it onto the list of the top ten best-selling cars in the UK for the first time.
