Biofuels may be dangerous, says study

Environmentally-friendly fossil fuels used to power used cars may cause damage to the planet, it has been claimed.

Research carried out by consultancy E4tech, commissioned by the Department for Transport, reveals that millions of acres of forests will be destroyed and turned into plantations to meet the government's targets.

By pursuing its target, the UK will fail to meet the minimum sustainability standard set by the European Commission.

According to the Epoch Times, a leaked memo from the European Commission’s agriculture directorate indicates that Europe's biofuels industry - which receives $4.5 billion (£3 billion) a year in subsidies - would be jeopardised if wider environmental considerations were brought in.

The news provider reported the comments of one official who claimed that the unguided use of indirect land use would kill biofuels in the European Union.

Earlier this week, research by the European Commission indicated that biofuels are one of the most important global resources for meeting renewable energy targets.ADNFCR-2576-ID-19650424-ADNFCR
