1 in 3 young motorists drive 'recklessly'
Young motorists urged to drive safely
Almost one in three young drivers (30 per cent) have admitted to driving recklessly and illegally, a new survey has revealed.
In addition, some 35 per cent of motorists aged under 25 said they regularly break speed limits in built-up areas, according to the report released by the Co-operative Insurance and road safety charity Brake.
A quarter of respondents even admitted to driving without insurance, without a valid MOT certificate and without a driving licence.
"Brake urges all young people to take the responsibility of driving seriously, making sure they're fully insured and driving legally, and never taking risks such as texting their friends while driving or overtaking on a blind bend," said the charity's deputy chief executive Cathy Keeler.
David Neave, director of general insurance at the Co-operative Insurance, said the figures show more needs to be done in raising young drivers' awareness of safety issues.
Separate research from car insurance firm RIAS recently revealed that almost eight million motorists of all ages are risking their safety by failing to undertake important safety checks on their vehicles.
